A relaxing day at DAP Hari Raya bash - The Malaysian Insider

DAP secretary general YAB Lim Guan Eng at Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim Hari Raya open house in Penang,

DAP Advisor YB Lim Kit Siang welcoming Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim at DAP Raya open house in Bangi, Selangor.

By Debra Chong

BANGI, Oct 18 – For a first effort, it was pretty decent. The spread was humble but substantial; the entertainment low-key but it captured the spirit of the festival; and the turnout small but muhibbah.
By all counts, the DAP's first national level Aidilfitri open house at the open-air carpark of the Kajang Municipal Council Stadium in Bandar Baru Bangi here was a success.
The members of the public who streamed in came in all shapes and shades. There were Chinese salaam-ing other Chinese, Malays, Indians and vice versa.
The mood was genial if not jolly. It helped that the weather held for the brief three hours the party lasted.
For once, it seemed, the opposition politicians were able to relax and mingle directly with the rakyat without fear of being molested or harrassed about when they were going to act on their promise to take over Putrajaya. The feel-good vibes were reflected in the easy smiles they wore on their faces.
There were representatives from the top echelon of the triparte Pakatan Rakyat at the do. Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail the president ofParti Keadilan Rakyat were there. Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, the president of PAS also attended.
The three main leaders delivered a short speech each. Mainly it focused on practising good governance and building a strong and lasting partnership among the different ethnic communities.
Much of it was spin, of course, but the core message it attempted to convey was nevertheless true, more so in light of the special reminder issued by the council of rulers last Thursday. Solidarity amid diversity.
Or as Anwar summed it: "Let us not, while building, be demolishing."
He said that it was a quote from Muhammad Natsir, an influential Indonesian politician and ulama. He explained that it was a reminder that as important as it was to build for the future, it was equally important not to break down the foundations of the society it was building on.
"The issue of morals and ethics, that is still core," Anwar said, before launching a new book about the DAP secretary-general titled "Lim Guan Eng: Dari Penjara Ke Tampuk Kuasa" (Lim Guan Eng: FromPrison to Seat of Power).

Teresa Kok Freed : From Malaysiakini

DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok was released unconditionally at 1pm today, after being held under the Internal Security Act for seven days.

Kok, 43, walked out from the Jalan Travers police station at 1.40pm, accompanied by her lawyer Sankara Nair and her personal aide, Mandy Ooi.She was greeted by her visibly elated parents.Kok was immediately hugged by her 71-year-old mother, Poon Seh Kwon, who gave her daughter a bunch of white and pink roses.

"I don't know what I've got into... I don't know what is the real reason (that) caused me to (be) put behind bars for one week," she told journalists as she left the police station.
Kok, who is also the Selangor state executive council member, expressed that she was still slightly shaken but glad that she was released."(There is) no reason at all to put me under ISA... What have I done? What have I said?" she asked.

During the whole one week, they didn't show any proof or evidence to show that I made statements that have caused racial and religious tension."The parliamentarian said that she felt like "fool" when she was incarcerated not knowing the grounds for her arrest.

When asked the reason for her release, Kok said, "I don't know... I don't know why I was charged... Of course, they have to release me; they find no case against me."Kok thanked all those who had campaigned for her release including those from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, such as "her friend" Zaid Ibrahim who had resigned as the de facto law minister following her arrest.

Deputy inspector-general of police Ismail Omar said that Kok was released after investigations showed that there was no reason to detain her any further.Kok held a press conference two hours later at the DAP headquarters in Petaling Jaya.‘Honey, I'm home; I've had a hard day'Minutes after the IT-savvy and affable politician was released, she updated her social networking Facebook account.

At 1.35pm, she posted an entry in her Facebook saying, "Teresa sings ‘Honey, I'm home, I've had a hard day, pour me a cold one da da da...", which immediately attracted comments welcoming her release.DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang also appeared to be surprised by Kok's early release.Lim wrote in his blog that he received a phone call with the caller identification ‘Teresa' at 12.56pm while he was having lunch in Ipoh, Perak and he had wondered who was using the MP's mobile phone."But it was her on the line and I wondered how she wangled the use of her phone while in detention. But no, she did no such improper thing. She told me that she was being released.

Bravo. The irresistible pressures for her unjust and undemocratic detention had succeeded," wrote Lim, who is also the Ipoh Timor MP.Last Friday, Kok was arrested under Section 73(1) of the ISA at 11.18pm, allegedly for sparking religious and racial tension ostensibly for her role in an Islamic matter. She was arrested on the same day with controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin and Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, who was however released after 18 hours.

Free Teresa Kok Now!

The following is a transcript of what Teresa’s mum said outside the police station after visiting her for 90 minutes.

“I hope she can regain her freedom and come out as soon as possible and continue to live an ordinary life instead of being detained in a cage like a dog. They locked her up once she walked into that room which is only 6′ x 8′. She is not allowed to read newspaper or any other reading material. She lost all her freedom!
“I feel so sad. Yes they gave her three meals a day, but the food is bad! She had diarrhea this morning and her blood pressure plunged!
“Her dad did not notice it but she was so pale when we met her. It pains me seeing her like that. I never expected that my daughter who spend 2/3 of her time a day servicing the people, fighting for the people’s interest and right, can end up like this.
“This Bahasa Malaysia newspaper purposely defamed her, twisted the facts just to get her into trouble, to victimise her.
“I can only encourage her. I told her we are people who believe in God. Bible told us those who are victimise because they fight for justice are the blessed people. Such people are children of God. I encourage her with these words. I told her not to give up but keep on praying.”

DAP takes to the streets over price hikes

KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 – Yesterday's fuel price hike announcement by the government was immediately followed by a snaking line of cars, motorbikes and trucks at all petrol stations across the nation rushing to beat the midnight deadline for cheaper petrol, which saw a jump of some 40 per cent, from RM1.92 to RM2.70.
This morning, the DAP held a street protest against the Cabinet decision to increase fuel and power prices in Jalan Pasar in the heart of the city. Among the DAP leaders who attended the protest were Teresa Kok, Fong Kui Lun, Tan Seng Giaw, Lim Lip Eng and Janice Lee.
Led by outspoken Cheras MP, Tan Kok
Wai, the DAP protestors had gathered as early as 10am outside an Indian restaurant fronting the main road and waited almost an hour before demanding that the Government retract the price increase instantly.
"We want the Government to immediately announce that the increment will be stopped immediately because the public anger has reached to the maximum. We call on the Government to act wisely. Stop robbing the rakyat!" Tan pronounced.
He warned that the Government's failure to do so would result in a nightmare.
His colleague, Teresa Kok, added that businesses would be seriously affected by the last-minute price increase and would thereby pass on the higher costs to the consumer.
"We can anticipate the prices going up. This is a serious inflation. We've been told the Lorry Association are going to increase their transportation costs.
"We're a petrol exporting country. All these years, the government earned so much from export (of oil). Instead of increasing petrol prices, they should be giving back to the people. They don't talk about this anymore," she noted.
The street protest was a very last minute affair, Kok said. It had been decided by the party only last night. A similar protest was also held this morning in Ipoh, Perak, almost simultaneously at 11am. Kok hinted that these protests might even spread to the rest of the country.
"I anticipate that. Now the Government is talking about taking away the subsidy to bus companies. Just now my colleague, Tan Kok Wai, talked about the extravagance of the Government. How do they justify this?" she queried.
Despite the small number of actual protestors, they managed to attract a large number of curious onlookers from among the business owners and passers-by thronging the vicinity, which clogged up the narrow but popular thoroughfare. Jalan Pasar is after all a well known electronic goods paradise among locals and tourists alike.
Though most of them did not appear to support the DAP's public protest, some agreed that it was a way to draw the government's attention to the issue at hand as well as to create greater awareness among the often apathetic rakyat.
"We never said they (the government) shouldn't increase the price. We're a civilised society so don't tell us stories. You inform the people, they understand. Don't create a panic," said a bystander who was attracted to the noise from his office across the road.
The 55-year-old remisier who only wanted to be known as Kumar said that what the Government had done by its last-minute announcement was create a panic buying situation last night as economic-minded Malaysians rushed out to buy the last of the "cheap" petrol.
He himself had resorted to riding his motorcycle to the nearest petrol station to his home and filled up several containers' worth of petrol for his car. It took him three trips and over two-and-a-half hours to do so, but he felt it was worth every sen. It had saved him RM15 to RM18 of the amount he would have to pay when the new price kicked in.
